Searching for reliable services and products
The CheckaTrade web site allows you to enter your postcode (e.g. BN2 3RN) or county (e.g. East Sussex) + a key word (e.g. kitchen installation, carpet fitters, damp, dry rot, plumbers) to search for tradespeople who have received high feedback ratings from satisfied customers.

The Buy With Confidence Traders list is provided by Brighton & Hove Trading Standards Service. The categories are similar to those in our own A-Z list below. The Buy With Confidence Traders list contains useful links to approved local traders' web sites.

Brighton FreeCycle files - these documents include lists of recommended mechanics, plumbers, painters & decorators, van services, washing machine repairers etc. Note that you may have to be a member of Brighton FreeCycle to access the above link.

www.pricerunner.co.uk includes reviews on the quality of products and delivery services as well as the best prices to be found on the Internet. It is wise to compromise slightly on price if this allows you to find a trader with a better reliability rating. For example, www.tribaluk.com offers both reliability and competitive prices for items such as cookers, hobs, fridges and washing machines. Delivery for these is free and the products are usually delivered from their manufacturers' UK warehouses using the manufacturers' choice of transporters. The Internet suppliers with the lower reliability ratings usually make a mess of delivery e.g. the item arrives late or the transport company leaves it in the front garden! Damaged items are not so common.

Amazon.co.uk's web site contains useful customer reviews on smaller electronic products such as breadmakers, digital cameras, i-pods, computer software as well as books and CD/DVDs.
